In the current music industry climate, it is increasingly difficult for artists to retain genuine interest from an audience. There are incredible amounts of competition with each music publisher trying to reach these audiences with their releases. However, there are only a few record labels that really stand out amongst the others. Many a time these labels are distributing music from various continents like Europe, Asia and America etc. The likes of Redefinition Records are worth their weight in gold through their curation process. The label was founded by Damu The Fudgemunk and John Notarfrancesco with their modus operandi founded upon “quality over quantity”. The majority of material released by REDEF is meticulously prepared from the artwork and music to the manufacturing of vinyl runs. The new year saw the American record label starting off with the release of German based producer Klaus Layer (aka Captain Crook)’s “Restless Adventures”.
Around two weeks ago we premiered the single “Inner Worlds” off the forthcoming The Boomjacks’ album entitled “Moments in Space and Time”. Finally the Finnish producer duo’s new release is out now. “Moments in Space and Time” is strictly an instrumental LP, with obscure samples and jazzy sound patterns spread through out.
European producers continue to play a bigger part in the direction of underground hip hop every year. There are now so many dope beatmakers from Europe that several have caught on with a wider audience, globally. Listeners should still keep attentive, as there are too many great upcoming and lesser-known producers coming out of Europe to be ignored. One of them is Finnish hip hop beat maker, Maw, who has just dropped his new project “Second Homilies Of The Panda Tao” on the Cold Busted label.
The music industry has changed over the last couple of years. One of the best things that has happened to the ever evolving music market is the ability for artists to self release and self promote. But there is a dark side to this, namely over-saturation. With this massive amount of music, the quantity goes up but the quality often dips. This means that releases worth hearing often go unnoticed due to the sheer volume of material being released. For a perfect example of this, look no further than Josh Furey’s recent release “Petals”.
Launched in 2006, Brooklyn Radio began as a music site and online radio station, with founders based in Brooklyn, NY. The site always guarantees listeners high quality projects and was started up as a means of supporting Brooklyn’s local DJ’s. One of their main focuses are their well presented mixes. I had found a lot of valuable gems from their Mixcloud archives previously. A couple days ago they published a guest mix from Meerssen producer, VINK. “Cloud Fall” is a dope project, especially dedicated to lovers of great boom-bap styled hip hop.
Since September 2008 U Call That Love brings to you the passion & history of hip hop culture and instrumental music. After a couple years of a cultural activity, which was focused mostly on spreading the word about indie hip hop and electronic releases as a music website, we decided to step further and launch a small record label. The first release on U Call That Love is the album “Moments in Space and Time” by The Boomjacks. The main single from this project, “Inner Worlds”, is out now.
It’s the next time to look quickly at The Doppelgangaz’ hidden-under-black-cloaks music. After a successful year, Matter Ov Fact & EP have announced their new project, “Peace Kehd”, which was publuished on February 18th. With this project The Ghastly Duo prove that they are one of the most enigmatic indie artists at the moment.
Many people across the globe are providing dope mixes at the moment. Beyond all mixtapes and podcasts there is a place for valuable radio shows too. One of these highly recommended online broadcasts comes from Dutch artist DJ Irie. He is keeping busy with his weekly programme “IrieRadio”, which is broadcasting through Fresh Radio.
In the next weeks we will receive tons of new music releases. Everyone should be open-minded and meticulously find details about the upcoming records, because it will be so easy to sleep on dope projects in Spring. On the 25th of February dropped a single of one of the forthcoming albums – “Qi” by the producer duo Decap and Brady Watt. “Grand Design” is a nice prelude to their LP.
U Call That Love is not only a music website, which is focused on independent hip hop culture and instrumental music. If you will look closely at our service, you should find more interesting features. One of our primary goals is to spread the word about valuable music through mixes, mixtapes and other projects. In November we premiered the very first of our compilation album, “Sounds Across the Globe”, what consists of classy music from UCTL’s friends and affiliates.
Nowadays we can reach new music from different record labels and artists without any borders or obstacles. It looks like every day there is fresh and amazing releases, but it is very difficult to find time for all this new music. Many people need much more attention from music websites and listeners. One of these artists, who definitely should be more recognizable in the world is German DJ BeatPete. A couple weeks ago he has dropped #36 part of his vinyl session.
BamaLoveSoul is one of the dopest music websites dedicated to soul, R&B, electronic music, hip hop and related genres. BLS’ motto is simple: “decreasing your hard drive since 2008″. This American site is well-known through promoting music from random artists and releasing fantastic mixes and compilations, which are provided by DJ Rahdu. The latest project – “Honey Molasses: Jill Scott Remixes & Covers” – published on the 16th March.
French producers often bring much dope hip hop music, no matter if they record a solo project or a collaborative album. I appreciate the feeling and style of many dope beatmakers from this country. Wax Tailor, Al’Tarba, Roger Molls, 20Syl, Terem, Alterbeats or Jaze Baqti are some of the artists, who everyone should follow. On the 17 February 2014 a valuable LP was released entitled “Straight From Da Couch” from French producers, Big Ben & Kostia.
Chicago hip hop scene is definitely one of my favorites across the globe. Many talented artists come from this city. From people who have started their career in the Windy City like No I.D., Common Sense (f/k/a Common) or Kanye West and then moved to other places, to well-known figures like Lupe Fiasco, Rhymefest, Chance the Rapper, to a bunch of underground rappers and producers like Typical Cats, Maker, Thaione Davis, Psalm One, Verbal Kent, The Opus. In January was released another proof of quality of Chi-Town’s hip hop artists. The duo The Ol’ Days, have dropped an amazing album entitled “1979”.
Australian and New Zealand artists always amazed me with their talents and different perspectives to making music. Even if some of the Emcees or producers, who live there, are an immigrant from other country. Since October 2012 I have started following Raiza Biza from Auckland/Hamilton, New Zealand. This rapper with African roots is working on his new project. Recently, he has dropped a solid single – “Stay Down (I Love Jhene Aiko)”.
